The Holy War (1965, Poland)

The Holy War wita wojna 1965

Original title: wita wojna

Running time: 90 minutes

Language: Polish

Two football clubs Naprzod (Onward) and Sparta, established in nearby towns in Silesia, Poland, are the eternal enemies, not only on the field, but also among the fans, who will stop at nothing to secure the win of their beloved team. But this time it is something more - the Naprzod is dangerously close of being relegated and in the last game of the season they will have to beat Sparta to stay in the division. Heniek and Antoni, two of the most devoted fans of Naprzod are trying to find a way to improve the chances of their team, while they spend some time in the local police station after being arrested. They wonder would it be possible that the top players of Sparta could be arrested just before the game... But they are not the only ones that try to find a solution - team manager, Kozuszek, pays a friendly visit to Sparta manager and makes a friendly bribe offer hoping that he is dealing with a man of the world, but soon it turns out that the incriminating conversation between the two was recorded by Sparta officials and whole meeting was a trap. Desperate Heniek comes up with a plan, or rather his girlfriend Gabrysia does, how they could eliminate the Sparta top player, Walczak. Gabrysia thinks she could easily seduce him and thus put his mind off the game. But the plan has tiny little flaw - Gabrysia falls in love with Walczak...

Polish comedy that concentrates on the devotion of local communities when it comes to football - everyone from barber to railroad workers are interested in the games and rivalry with the local opponents. Of course it is caricature, but with good cast and decent script it is a nice piece of entertainment.
